Workshop Descriptions
Employment, Education and You – Pathways Workshop
(1 hour – free)
Educational planning presentations (free) – this one-hour presentation covers essential skills and why they are important for work and local educational options (upgrading, Grade 12/equivalent, post-secondary, apprenticeship). This workshop is great for client groups that you may have onsite. For client groups, we can also provide 1:1 educational planning sessions after the presentation.
Literacy and Essential Skills Advocacy Training
(2 hours – free)
This training is for community partners for staff/team meetings or professional development sessions. It will assist practitioners to better understand potential literacy issues and how to refer clients for assistance.
Topics include
- literacy and the 9 essential skills
- why do people have low literacy levels
- why assessment is important
- making referrals
- local programs
- being an advocate
Clear Writing – Get the Results You Want
(3 hours – $300 + printing, mileage and accommodation if traveling 100+ km)
Are your messages understood the first time? In this workshop you will learn to
- use Clear Writing guidelines
- present your thoughts clearly
- design your written materials so you audience understands them
- incorporate Clear Writing into your workplace and everyday life
Communicating Effectively with Clients
(3 hours – $300 + printing, mileage and accommodation if traveling 100+ km)
The focus of this workshop is to assist you to further develop your communication strategies for use with clients. It covers
- interviewing skills and best practices
- developing a rapport
- reading body language
- using active listening
- identifying barriers
- using Clear Writing
Labour Market Information (LMI) for Literacy and Employment Practitioners
(3 hours – $300 + printing, mileage and accommodation if traveling 100+ km)
At the end of this session, you will have enhanced
- understanding of labour market information and where to get it
- knowledge of how to use LMI to better assist your learners/clients
- ability to bridge LBS learners to employment (including an employment goal tracker)
Learning Challenges Workshop for Literacy and Employment Practitioners
(3 hours – $300 + printing, mileage and accommodation if traveling 100+ km)
This workshop (available in half or full day) focuses on defining learning challenges and identifying learning challenges markers and processing areas. You will be introduced to the learning challenges pre-screen that you can use with your clients/learners. We also discuss
- factors involved in referring
- making referrals
- learning strategies for upgrading and employment
- further resources
Part 2 – Learning Strategies for the Classroom – is also available for literacy practitioners only.
Learning Challenges Assessment Tool (LCAT) Training for Adult Literacy Learners
Fee – $1,000 for 1.5 day in person training, plus printing costs ($20 per participant), mileage and accommodation if needed
Are you a literacy practitioner that has learners that you suspect have learning challenges? Are you looking for ways to assess these challenges and assist these learners with strategies? If so, this training is for you! ABEA developed the Learning Challenges Assessment Tool (LCAT) in 2005 and we have recently updated it to align with the OALCF. This is a comprehensive assessment of reading, writing and math skills and identifies if learners have visual, auditory or organizational processing challenges. It also has a strategy list for use in the classroom.
