Committees and Planning Groups

Adult Basic Education Association (ABEA) facilitates several community planning committees.  For more information about these committees, please connect with Sara Gill, Executive Director.

Literacy Community Planning (LCP) Committee – Members are from each of the 7 adult Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) programs in Hamilton. The LCP Committee participates in the local planning and coordination of adult literacy services in our area.

Meetings – Monthly for 1.5 hours, virtual.

Hamilton LBS Frontline Working Group – This committee consists of adult literacy practitioners from the 7 local Literacy and Basic Skills programs.  This committee promotes discussion and develops relationships among frontline staff, provides input to the LCP table and provides opportunities for knowledge exchange.

Meetings – 4-5 x per year, 2 hours, virtual.

Skills Development Flagship (SDF) Committee – This committee is open to members of services/organizations with an investment and/or mandate to support people who are unemployed/underemployed.  This can include members from service delivery agencies, educators and representatives from all 3 levels of government.  The Skills Development Flagship assists individuals to gain access to opportunities for meaningful employment.  Our target audience are those that have been marginalized from the labour market.  We work to ensure that the knowledge and skills of workers match the needs of Hamilton’s economy.  This committee

  • ensures quality service across the employment and training services continuum for jobseeker and employer clients
  • shares information about challenges and opportunities across the employment and training services network
  • identifies practitioner training needs and develop shared training opportunities open to staff across the service continuum
  • identifies other projects that may support service delivery for the employment and training system in Hamilton

reduces barriers to education to enter the workforce.  Needs are focused on demand-led training but also the life stabilization needs for education-to-employment success.  ABEA chairs this committee in partnership with the Mohawk College Access Team.  Membership is open to practitioners with an interest in supporting education and employment outcomes for people with multiple barriers.
